Education Day 5th May 2007

John and Karen Ainley were the hosts for the day at their property just outside of Creswick, situated in the Victorian Dividing Ranges. The morning started off with low cloud and light drizzle but this didn’t deter the spirits of the 30 or so members and guests who attended.

The purpose of the gathering was an Education Day for the Victorian Working Draught Horse Association. First on the program was a practical demonstration by Dave Jobe, the creator of the Horse Float Camper. This drew many a favourable comment from the crowd as well as interest from some guests all the way from England who thought it was a great idea, but wondered why this product wasn’t available in England. (Standby for that.)

After morning tea John Ainley gave a talk and answered questions from members and guests about his Clydesdales, harnessing and about the working horses in general.

A very welcome lunch was next, allowing members to catch up and have a chat. The hot soup, sandwiches and sausages rolls were a treat and very much appreciated.

The afternoon saw the drizzle dry up and the sun even made an appearance for a while. It was then time for the main event. The working horse display!

This was led by John Ainsley and his two magnificent Clydesdales, Kelly and Chloe. John gave instruction to his guests on how to drive the horses around the yard.

Kevin and Aileen Marshall along with their two horses, Elly and Shaa, also took part of the main event, showcasing the ability and placid nature of these gentle giants.

John and Kelly then took to the obstacle course in the paddock and displayed the strength and power of these magnificent horses, showing some of the tasks these horses were originally used for.

The day finally ended late in the afternoon with a great serve of Bushman’s stew, jacket potatoes, apple pie and cream, and a good glass of red. A great day was had by all.

Special thanks should also go to Teresa Drayton (sec/treasurer), Dave Newman (safety officer) and Kevin and Aileen Marshall, for all their help and support. John and Karen Ainley also deserve a special mention for their hospitality and hosting. Also not to forget Kelly, Chloe, Elly and Shaa who all put on a fautless display.

Thanks to all those who turned out, for making the day such a success.

All the Best from the Horse Float Camper crew,

Dave and Mike.
